AFP: Mexicans honor drug war victims on Day of the Dead

November 2 2011 – Day of the Dead in Mexico is usually a time for celebrating and remembering lost loved ones. But in the context of a brutal drug war that has cost 40,000 lives, the commemoration of the dead has taken on a more sombre tone this year.

October 31 2011 – On the eve of the traditional Day of the Dead, Mexicans gathered in the country’s capital for an all-night candlelit vigil for victims of the country’s on-going drug war. More than 40,000 people have died since President Calderon launched his assault against drug cartels and organized crime in 2006. For AFP – please see the video here.

Family celebrates Dia de los Muertos in the cemetery

November 3 2008 – The Gutierrez Renteria family arrived early at the Panteon Frances (the French Cemetery) in Mexico City on Saturday morning. They had a lot to do to honor their dead loved ones in recognition of Dia De Los Muertos.

This advertising campaign is currently running on buses, bus stops and billboards across Mexico City. The ads are promoting a funeral home, and was run in conjunction with Day of the Dead.

This weekend Mexico celebrates one of its most popular festivals – Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Although that might sound rather morbid, the festival is actually a celebration of life. Mexicans build ofrendas in their homes and leave out food and drink for the returning spirits of their dead loved one.

Day of the Dead Dance in Tetela de Volcan, Mexico

Tetela de Volcan is a small, traditional town in the state of Morelos, Mexico overlooked by the volcano Popocatepetl, also known as Popo. Here, the locals spend the days of November 1st and 2nd in their local cemeteries, tending to the graves of their loved ones and spending time with their families. In their homes, they build the traditional ofrendas to commemorate Dia de Muertos.

Come night time, Tetela’s inhabitants have their own special tradition.
